Celebrating
Diversity

Our Story
Having lived and worked in rural Newfoundland and Labrador, Trevor Taylor and Evan Parsons have always established themselves as out and proud members of the Queer community. Unfortunately, all too often they felt isolated - living in remote locations where Queer culture was rarely seen and even less frequently discussed.

This inspired them to start a movement. To create a space where members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community felt safe, respected and included. Whether you live in outport Newfoundland, the coast of Labrador, or downtown St. John’s, all residents of this great province, no matter how diverse, deserve respect, acceptance and kindness. To be seen. To be heard. To be loved.

On April 28th, 2019 Fogo Island Pride officially became an incorporated non-profit organization. At the inaugural meeting on May 14th, 2019, the founders, Evan Parsons and Trevor Taylor, addressed 14 community members of the Town of Fogo Island and established the first internal committee. This committee continues to work diligently to organize and implement Fogo Island’s Pride programs and initiatives.

About

Fogo Island Pride is a registered nonprofit organization focused on providing educational forums, festivals, physical and mental health activities, events, and other shared community experiences.

FIP will organize and implement events not only for 2SLGBTQIA+ residents and their allies, but the entire community of Fogo Island. The intent of our events will go beyond simply entertaining the residents and tourists who live, work and visit the island. Instead, our goal will be to encourage the acceptance of the Queer community in rural NL and reduce the prejudice/discrimination of disenfranchised and/or otherwise marginalized groups (racialize minorities, women, physical and mental disabilities, etc.).

Specifically, during June through August of each calendar year, Fogo Island Pride will facilitate a series of events which celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride.

The main goals for Fogo Island Pride are to:
  • Broaden knowledge of 2SLGBTQIA+ issues in rural Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Fight against prejudice and discrimination of marginalized groups
  • Advocate for members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and other marginalized groups
  • Promote acceptance and understanding through diversity and inclusion
